2014 Square Peg Estate Russian River Valley Pinot Noir Block 1
SP-SL Vineyard (Square Peg - Stoetz Lane) was named for Square Peg Estate’s Vineyard location on Stoetz Lane in Western Sonoma County. The estate vineyard has the distinction of being co-located in 3 of the most highly regarded AVA’s in which to grow Pinot Noir grapes; Russian River Valley, Green Valley of Russian River as well as Sonoma Coast.
What sets us apart from neighboring vineyards is the fact that we dry farm (no irrigation) our vines. Dry farmed grapes more accurately reflect terroir than irrigated grapes because the roots of the vines are forced to go very deep (20+ feet) to find moisture. As the roots travel ever deeper in search of moisture they make their way through varying soil types with different mineral and clay contents. The various soil types affect the vines growth, fruit production and maturation. Irrigated vines have no need to seek water at such extreme depths so their root systems are shallower, by comparison, to dry farmed grapes.
The fruit was cold-soaked for 3 days after de-stemming and lightly crushed to ensure that the berries remained whole in the fermenter. The cap was gently irrigated twice a day with intermittent punch-downs and extended maceration with immediate racking to French oak, for malolactic. The wine was bottled unfiltered & unfined.
The 2014 SP-SL Estate Vineyard Block 1 is 100% Calera. The bottling is amazingly rich, layered, soft and velvety. While it exhibits subtle fruit as well as the acidic backbone found in only the finest Russian River Valley/Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs, it shows incredible balance and restraint. The wine is elegant and complex, showing aromas of blackberries and dark cherries with hints of chocolate, tobacco and earth that softly make their way to a long finish.
